Hammers make Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham their top striker target

Eddie Nketiah and Ivan Toney are the other names on West Ham’s shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window

West Ham United remain focused on signing a new striker when the transfer window reopens, with Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham their main target.

Abraham has 12 goals in all competitions this season, making him the Blues’ leading scorer, but he was left out of the squad to face Manchester United on Sunday by new manager Thomas Tuchel.

According to the Daily Star, West Ham have identified Abraham as their first choice, but are also monitoring Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

The Hammers are in desperate need of another striker after selling Sebastian Haller to Ajax in January, leaving them with Michael Antonio as their only senior option for the rest of the season.

Antonio has performed admirably since being converted into a striker by David Moyes, with seven goals in 17 appearances for West Ham, who sit fourth in the table, a point ahead of rivals Chelsea.

Abraham is unsure about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge as rumours continue that the club will make a move to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland this summer.

The 23-year-old has faced increased competition for his place in the Chelsea team this season following the arrival of Timo Werner.

Although Werner has struggled since his £47.5million move from RB Leipzig last summer, he has much more top-level experience than Abraham, and it’s hoped that Tuchel’s appointment will help him rediscover his best form.

Abraham came through the ranks at Chelsea, making his debut in May 2016, but then had spells on loan at Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa before finally establishing himself in the first team last season.

His cause was aided by Chelsea’s transfer ban, which encouraged Frank Lampard to rely on several young prospects, including Fikayo Tomori, Reece James and Mason Mount.

But when the ban ended, the Blues spent heavily on new players and Abraham fears that the arrival of someone like Haaland will see him shunted even further down the pecking order.

Spurs have offered deal to promising talent on trial with West Ham

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have offered a contract to Birmingham City prospect Rico Browne, who is also a target for London rivals West Ham.

Football Insider report that Browne was offered a deal by Spurs after a trial period ended last month, an 18-month contract was verbally put forward to the ace, that has yet to be followed up by a written offer.

The 17-year-old is actually on trial with the Hammers right now, with the centre-back arriving at West Ham on Monday, with the ace able to feature in youth team fixtures.

Football Insider add that Spurs made their plunge for Browne after a trial period that saw the defender impress against heated rivals Arsenal.

Despite that, it’s claimed that the Hammers are in pole position for the prospect’s signing.

Birmingham, a club that have been run recklessly for some time now, are looking to overhaul their setup – effectively closing their academy in favour of B and C teams. Brentford operate with this model.

That leaves Browne available for exit, he wouldn’t be the only Blues talent to leave for a Premier League club this season as Calum Scanlon joined Liverpool in January in a deal worth around £500,000.

Browne has made three appearances in the FA Youth Cup over the last 15 months.

‘Frustrating’: Manager says reported Leeds and West Ham target could leave for free

Danny Owen

Reported Leeds United and West Ham target Matthew Sorinola is facing an uncertain future with his contract at MK Dons expiring in the summer, as manager Russell Martin explained to the MK Citizen.

Six years after Dele Alli went from a big fish in a small League One pond to the choppy waters of the Premier League, another MK Dons starlet is attracting interest from the top flight.

TEAMtalk claim that Leeds, West Ham, West Brom and Newcastle are all admirers of 20-year-old Sorinola.

The highly-rated defender has broke into MK Dons’ first-team this season while attracting further interest from Burnley, Brentford and a Crystal Palace side desperate to inject some youth into one of the oldest squads around.

Sorinola is due to become a free agent in July and, try as they might, MK Dons have been unable to extend his deal; much to the frustration of his manager.

“He got offered a contract a long time ago, one which we consider fair and fits in with the structure of our club and for a young player but he hasn’t signed it. There has been no real discussion from his end,” said former Norwich City and Rangers defender Martin.

“He has a decision to make at some point, but I cannot let it rumble on to the end of the season – that’s not ideal for anyone.

“We want people here who really want to be here long term and who are desperate to show that commitment.

“It’s frustrating for me, but he’s not been frozen out.”

Martin admitted during the January window that Sorinola’s head had been turned by transfer speculation, blaming the youngster’s agents for handing him some rather questionable advice.

A versatile player most comfortable on the left-hand side, could Sorinola fill a gap in Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds squad?
